Russia Opens Digital Lab to Train Next-Generation Oil Engineers
Perm Polytechnic University has launched a high-tech laboratory where students learn resource extraction with VR simulators and industrial software, bridging the gap between academia and industry.

A new digital laboratory for training engineers in Russia’s energy sector has opened at Perm National Research Polytechnic University. Equipped with advanced software and virtual reality technologies, the lab allows students to work on real-world industrial challenges in a safe environment, raising the quality of engineering education in the country.
The facility was established within the Department of Oil and Gas Technologies with support from LUKOIL-PERM under the “Priority 2030” program. Investments in the project exceeded 12 million rubles (approx. $144,000). The lab is designed not only for student training but also for scientific research and commercial projects with industry partners.
The lab features powerful computers with specialized software, enabling students to virtually design wells, simulate drilling processes, and develop oil fields. The same software is used in modern oil and gas enterprises. Special attention is given to VR and AR technologies: using the Unity platform, students build 3D models of oilfield sites, practice emergency responses, and learn safe drilling management—scenarios difficult to reproduce in real conditions without risk.
In the future, the laboratory will also host continuing education programs and applied projects, making it a vital link between research and production.
