Russia Turns to Digital Tech to Make Education More Accessible

From high-speed Wi-Fi to AI-ready classrooms, Russia is wiring its schools and colleges for the digital age.

Russia is accelerating efforts to modernize its education system with new digital infrastructure. In the Omsk region, twelve vocational schools have been equipped with high-speed Wi-Fi and modern video surveillance systems — part of the national program “Digital Platforms for the Social Sphere,” aimed at transforming key public sectors.

According to the regional Ministry of Digital Development and Communications, the new equipment serves two purposes: enhancing safety at schools and expanding access to digital learning resources. Cameras at building entrances are designed to protect students and teachers, while reliable wireless internet enables broader use of online educational platforms and cloud tools.

A National Priority

First Deputy Minister Maxim Makalenko emphasized that developing a digital learning environment is a top priority set by Omsk Governor Vitaly Khotsenko. The region is advancing under Russia’s national initiative “Data Economy and State Digital Transformation,” which seeks to embed modern IT systems across the public sector.

Since 2021, Omsk has modernized the IT infrastructure of 875 educational facilities, integrating high-speed networks and secure digital systems.

Building a Connected Future

Officials describe the effort as a systemic transformation rather than a one-off upgrade. The program reflects Russia’s broader goal of creating a safe, data-driven education ecosystem, where students can learn through digital tools and teachers can prepare future specialists ready for a tech-driven economy.
