Russian AI Company Smart Engines Develops World’s First Wearable Tomograph
The device fits in a suitcase and can operate in the field or in ambulances.
Russian AI company Smart Engines has developed what it describes as the world’s first wearable tomograph. The device is designed for 3D X-ray imaging and contains no mechanical components.
The prototype weighs about 5 kilograms and fits in a suitcase. It uses a proprietary technology called X-SLAM, a set of algorithms combining computer vision, X-ray tomography and artificial intelligence. An operator can freely move the radiation source around the patient’s body. Just 10 to 15 frames are needed for 3D reconstruction — 100 times fewer than in conventional CT, while the radiation dose is hundreds of times lower.
One feature of the project is its use of existing equipment to achieve a fundamentally new result. This approach can significantly shorten the path from prototype development to production.
The new tomograph could eventually be used in the field, in ambulances and at small medical facilities.
