Russian Schools Introduce Programming and AI Courses

From primary grades to high school, students across Russia—including in remote regions like Magadan—are beginning to learn coding and artificial intelligence basics.

Russian schools are increasingly adding courses in programming and neural networks, signaling a push to build digital literacy nationwide. Even in far-flung regions such as Magadan, students are now gaining access to cutting-edge education.

The effort is supported by a partnership with Sber, Russia’s largest bank, which is helping to create modern learning environments. A recent visit by Sberbank CEO Herman Gref to Magadan’s Engineering School highlighted the expansion of tech-focused curricula.

This year, programming courses will be introduced starting from elementary grades through the international educational initiative “Algorithmics.” Middle school students will study the basics of artificial intelligence, while high schoolers will have access to more advanced classes.

The early integration of IT into Russian education is already paying off. Increasingly, it is schoolchildren and students who are behind new digital innovations in the country. One project, developed by a 14-year-old student, has even been selected to be launched into orbit.
