UN Official Outlines How to Keep AI From Deepening Inequality
Ahead of the II Global Digital Forum, a UN official outlined key challenges in AI development and governance. Preventing the technology from deepening inequality was identified as one of the main priorities.

“One of our biggest challenges will be ensuring that AI does not deepen existing inequalities. My hope is that within the next decade, all countries and communities will have the minimum capabilities needed to develop AI solutions in their own languages and for their own priorities,” said Amandeep Singh Gill, UN Under-Secretary-General and Special Envoy for Digital and Emerging Technologies.
According to Gill, progress on AI governance is slow, but moving in the right direction. The real test will be whether all countries, rather than only technology leaders, can play a meaningful role in shaping the rules, norms and institutions.
“A single global AI regulatory regime is unlikely in the near term. However, I believe it is both realistic and necessary to build global agreement around shared principles, minimum safeguards and mechanisms for international cooperation on this technology,” Gill said.
