Marketplace users account for 63% of Russia’s total e‑commerce turnover, according to data released by Rospotrebnadzor, the country’s consumer protection watchdog. Since 2019, the value of online purchases has risen fivefold—from 2 trillion rubles ($~25 billion) to 11.1 trillion rubles ($~140 billion).

The agency says that as the global digital marketplace expands, product safety is becoming a key factor in maintaining consumer trust. Remote sales account for 37% of complaints submitted to Rospotrebnadzor. A law titled Ob otdelnykh voprosakh regulirovaniya platformennoy ekonomiki (On Certain Issues of Regulating the Platform Economy) is set to take effect on October 1, 2026, and is intended to protect the interests of both buyers and sellers. Officials say the unified rules will help establish a safer digital environment.

Another 20% Increase

According to the Association of E‑Commerce Companies, the market expanded by 28% in 2025. Russians most frequently order groceries, home goods and furniture, as well as clothing and footwear online. Over the past year, demand grew fastest for digital products and tools, as well as food delivery. Online commerce now accounts for 18% of total retail sales, and analysts expect the market to grow by at least another 20% in 2026.
