Florencio Sanchez: AI-Generated Content Must Be Verified Before Publication
Participants at the 2nd Global Digital Forum in Moscow are looking for ways to balance technological independence with international partnerships.

The forum, which runs from October 8 to 10, brings together guests to discuss how countries can combine homegrown technologies with the exchange of solutions and joint projects. Florencio Sanchez, director of an independent media outlet in Colombia, spoke to the IT Russia media platform about the growth of independent media, the use of artificial intelligence in journalism and the risks it poses:
– Colombia has many digital media outlets serving different audiences. We are also developing this type of journalism.
Traditional media in Colombia depend on central government funding. However, they are now losing audiences as people consume their content less frequently. As a result, independent media, including digital outlets, are growing, and audiences are showing greater interest in their content.
We use artificial intelligence quite extensively in our work. When creating content, we use both ChatGPT and Gemini to edit and generate material. For example, illustrations for articles are often created using AI models.
The risks associated with AI are indeed significant. One of them is the spread of large amounts of unreliable information generated by AI when its output is not properly monitored. Such content must not be used without verification. It needs to be critically assessed and fact-checked before it is published.
Another problem is the growing volume of fake news, videos and other content generated using artificial intelligence. Such content may be deliberately fabricated, and audiences often believe it without subjecting it to critical scrutiny. This poses a serious challenge for journalism.
For us, one of the main reasons to attend this forum is the opportunity to learn about technologies used in Russia and see how they are applied in digital journalism. We are also interested in Russia’s experience in addressing the problems and risks users face when working with new technologies.
