Godstime Edet: AI Needs Common Rules

Participants at the 2nd Global Digital Forum in Moscow discussed how countries can develop their own technologies while cooperating internationally without sacrificing digital autonomy.

Participants are looking for practical ways to carry out joint IT projects that combine technological independence with partnership. Godstime Edet, head of a Nigerian IT company, spoke to the IT Russia media platform about the key takeaways from these discussions.

– I run an IT company that develops digital applications and trains representatives of government agencies, businesses and the general public to use IT technologies and neural networks.

Two topics are particularly important to me at this forum. The first is rules for using artificial intelligence. We discussed this issue extensively and concluded that countries and companies currently tend to set their own rules independently. There are still no common international principles to help government agencies, businesses and ordinary users follow a consistent approach.

As an African representative, I am also concerned about Nigeria’s shortage of computing capacity. When I return home, I intend to urge government agencies and private companies to develop our own computing infrastructure. This would allow us to store and process data independently and develop AI models while retaining control over our information.

The second important topic is accountability for AI-generated results. Who is responsible for the information AI produces? How reliable is it, and who created and verified it? These questions are especially relevant to media outlets that distribute such information. It is not always clear where the information comes from or whether it can be trusted.

I would recommend that the international community develop common rules for using artificial intelligence. These rules should apply to all countries and companies rather than being established in isolation. Shared principles would help everyone in the digital ecosystem operate according to clear, consistent rules.

Moscow made a very positive impression on me. It is a beautiful city, and the people here are friendly and calm. I also noticed how security was organized at the forum. The arrangements are of a high standard, and this experience deserves attention.

I also enjoyed Moscow’s cultural side, especially the way Christianity is reflected in the city’s appearance. I was interested to learn that most Russians are Christians, as are many people in my country. Moscow also impressed me with its well-developed infrastructure and the wide range of opportunities it offers.

Finally, I would like to thank the forum’s organizers and the government of the Russian Federation for bringing together business leaders and policymakers responsible for decisions in various fields. Here, they can exchange views, discuss current challenges and look for solutions to existing problems.
