GLONASS Unveils Public Transit Tracking System That Works Without Satellite Signals
The system does not require a satellite signal to operate.
JSC GLONASS has unveiled a new local navigation system designed to track public transit even when satellite signals are unavailable. The system will serve both passengers and employees of transit operators.
The navigation system uses markers linked to precise geographic coordinates that are installed at transit stops, while buses and trolleybuses are equipped with dedicated identifiers.
“As a trolleybus or bus approaches a stop, its movement will be registered by the ERA-GLONASS-based monitoring platform and then transmitted to dispatch platforms operated by the city and transit companies, as well as to mapping services and mobile apps commonly used by passengers,” said Sergey Kukarev, Director of the Unified Autonomous Transport Identification System at JSC GLONASS. “Data is transmitted over a secure channel using the state information system's communications network, which is not affected by restrictions on mobile internet access.”
The system is set to begin experimental operation in Kaluga on September 1, covering three trolleybus and bus routes.
