Crimea to Launch Phygital Sports Electives for Schoolchildren

Russian schools may soon offer an optional module in phygital sports, blending physical activity with esports and VR to build both strategy and digital literacy skills.

The initiative has already gained support in Crimea, where officials noted that such classes could help teenagers develop strategic thinking and improve their digital skills.

The idea was introduced by Russia’s Ministry of Education and the All-Russian Federation of Phygital Sports, which are jointly preparing a flexible module for school programs. The focus is on electives rather than mandatory courses.

Phygital sports combine traditional physical activity with esports and VR technologies. Unlike ordinary video games, these are structured, multi-layered disciplines.

Karen Sargsyan, vice president of the Crimean Federation of Phygital Sports, strongly endorsed the idea. He pointed out that gaming is already an integral part of most modern teenagers’ lives.

“This is not just a game. There’s a strict training schedule, specific skill improvement goals, and clear rules of conduct,” Sargsyan emphasized.

According to him, these electives teach students planning, error analysis, and teamwork. Schoolchildren start working toward results while simultaneously improving their digital literacy.

Experts see the introduction of such electives as a crucial step. It legitimizes and structures young people’s gaming interests. Students gain the opportunity to develop personal qualities, and their passion for games may evolve into professional skills in programming, design, or video production. In this way, the elective serves as a bridge between entertainment and real prospects in the digital economy.
