AI Is Set to Fully Personalize the Education Process in the Long Term

According to an expert, the key challenge today is finding a reasonable balance between using new tools and preserving academic integrity.

Yury Chekhovich, PhD in physics and mathematics, an expert in academic ethics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, head of Laboratory No. 42 at the Institute of Control Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and founder of the academic integrity checking service Domate, spoke to IT Russia about the potential of artificial intelligence in science and education.

According to him, the use of AI requires clear rules and ethical standards. As a result, researchers face a complex task: defining where those ethical boundaries lie.

“Even when preparing a written paper, the mere fact of using AI is not inherently problematic. What matters is how exactly the algorithm was used. Problems arise when AI use leads to data distortion, plagiarism, or falsification of results. In such cases, this is no longer an ethical gray area but outright academic fraud,” the expert explained.

The Potential of Personalization

Today, as elsewhere in the world, the academic community is seeking a reasonable balance between adopting new tools and maintaining academic integrity. Many leading universities in Russia’s major cities are attempting to integrate AI technologies into the educational process, including the Higher School of Economics, Moscow City University, ITMO University, and Saint Petersburg Electrotechnical University LETI. However, Chekhovich believes that instructors are often playing catch-up.

“Studies published this year show that more than 80 percent of Russian students use AI on a regular basis. This figure is growing rapidly and is likely to reach its peak soon. Faculty members are somewhat less active. Data indicate that more than 70 percent of instructors at leading universities use AI at least once a week. An interesting phenomenon is the emergence of so-called ‘AI vegans’ among faculty, who categorically reject any generative algorithms. But this is more of a personal stance than a broader trend,” Chekhovich added.

He also noted that the main potential of artificial intelligence in modern education is linked to adaptive learning.

“In the long term, algorithms will be able to fully personalize the education process: adjusting curricula, task complexity, and learning pace to individual students, tracking comprehension levels, and returning to problematic topics as needed. For now, however, this remains more of a concept than everyday practice. Only the first cautious steps are being taken in this area,” the researcher concluded.
