Russia Sees Surge in Demand for IT Talent

Jobs in 3D printing, the Internet of Things, and virtual reality are growing at record pace as the country pushes digital transformation and tech independence.

Russia’s job market is undergoing a rapid digital shift. Demand for specialists in 3D printing, IoT (Internet of Things), and virtual and augmented reality has surged across multiple regions — in some cases by more than 40%, according to a new report by Izvestia.

Experts link the rise to Russia’s industrial modernization, import substitution efforts, and growth in domestic manufacturing. Once considered niche, these professions are now central to the country’s tech ecosystem.

3D Printing and Smart Systems on the Rise

The role of an additive manufacturing engineer — someone who designs digital models and manages 3D printers that produce industrial parts, medical prosthetics, or architectural elements — has become mainstream. Since the start of the year, nearly 1,000 job openings in this field have been posted, with Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Sverdlovsk Region leading the hiring wave.

IoT engineering is also expanding fast. Specialists are developing connected systems for smart homes, industrial automation, and urban infrastructure, making the field one of the fastest-growing in the Russian tech sector.

Engineering Becomes the Core of Digital Growth

The boom in emerging technologies is driving the creation of new professions and elevating the value of engineering thinking. Experts note that professionals in VR, IoT, and 3D printing are becoming critical for projects related to smart cities, industrial automation, and digital education.

Russia is now building a self-sufficient digital engineering ecosystem, where demand is shifting from implementers to creators — professionals who design and shape the next generation of technological solutions.
