Engineers at Sankt-Peterburgskiy Gosudarstvennyy Elektrotekhnicheskiy Universitet “LETI” (St. Petersburg State Electrotechnical University “LETI”) have unveiled a compact antenna designed for the GLONASS navigation satellite system, the university said.

“The compact L1+L2 GLONASS antenna has no equivalents on the Russian market. To manufacture it, researchers from the Department of FET developed a proprietary ceramic composition. By adjusting the proportions of its components, it is possible to achieve different dielectric properties, significantly simplifying the antenna design process. This makes it possible to tailor production to specific customer requirements, such as minimizing size and weight,” Anna Antonova, a process engineer and postgraduate researcher at the university’s Department of Physical Electronics and Technology, was quoted as saying.

Dual-Frequency Operation and Edge Over Imports

The ceramic-based universal antenna can be used in ground-based satellite signal receivers across various sectors, including transport, geodesy, maritime navigation, and industrial systems.

The development primarily replaces imported components used in GLONASS consumer equipment. Another advantage is its support for the L1 and L2 sub-bands, allowing compensation for ionospheric error through simultaneous reception of signals at two separated frequencies.

The university’s press service added that St. Petersburg engineers have produced several prototypes of the compact L1+L2 GLONASS ceramic antenna. The flat 30-gram device consists of ceramic dielectrics that give it a miniature footprint.

Testing under real navigation field conditions showed that the experimental antenna samples outperform imported counterparts.
