Researchers at Sechenov University and medical technology company Nikamed have developed Russia's first rehabilitation orthosis for restoring hand function. The university team prepared the technical documentation and rehabilitation program, while its industry partner built the first working prototype.

The device was originally designed to support the recovery of a patient who underwent Russia's first successful transplant of a donor forearm and hand at the N. V. Sklifosovsky Research Institute for Emergency Medicine.

“Thanks to the surgeons' work and comprehensive rehabilitation using this unique rehabilitation orthosis, the patient was able to grasp objects, shake hands, and return to work just three months after the operation,” said Valentin Sharobaro, Director of the Plastic Surgery Clinic at Sechenov University. “The rehabilitation program will continue with a gradual increase in the load placed on the hand.”

According to the developers, the device has a broad range of potential applications. It can also be used for rehabilitation following injuries and surgical procedures involving tendons, joints, and muscles.
