In Russia, Drones Take on Illegal Dumping
Drones are being used to identify and monitor unauthorized landfills across the country.

At the National Industrial Forum in Moscow, Ramila Agaeva, head of the environmental oversight committee of Russia’s Leningrad Region, explained how drones are transforming the way authorities monitor and enforce regulations against illegal dumping.
She shared practical experience showing how unmanned aerial technologies help inspectors detect and oversee unauthorized landfills in hard-to-reach areas, including restricted sites.
The agency chief also presented successful state environmental oversight practices using drones in the Leningrad Region, stressing the importance of integrating modern technological solutions into regulatory work.
A Digital Inspector
In Russia, drones are increasingly used not only to track accumulations of waste but also to support shoreline cleanups. One notable example is the Clean Shore project.
Satellites and drones help locate waste clusters, accurately determine their composition and volume, and support data-driven decisions. Over time, this advanced approach is expected to be rolled out in other regions as well.
