New Technologies to Stop Illegal Logging at Lake Baikal
Modern digital solutions from Russian developers are designed to detect illegal logging and identify emergencies in forested areas.

New technologies are set to be deployed at Lake Baikal to monitor logging activity, according to UrbanTech Group, a Russian company that develops intelligent transport solutions, photo and video monitoring systems, and automated control platforms.
At Lake Baikal, UrbanTech can provide an integrated system designed to monitor timber transportation. Cameras track vehicle movements, while a neural network analyzes the data and automatically identifies illegal timber shipments.
Helping Catch Violators
Drones will be used to monitor hard-to-reach areas. From the air, they can record all logging activity, after which authorities can determine which operations are illegal. Similar solutions are already in use in other Russian regions. For Lake Baikal, these technologies are especially relevant following the adoption of a new law that bans clear-cut logging, with the exception of sanitary logging approved at the federal level.
Drones and smart camera systems are already helping protect forests across Russia. They make it possible to quickly detect wildfire outbreaks and unauthorized logging, and there have already been cases where violators were apprehended on the spot.
