Moscow Region Will Fully Digitize All Artificial Reservoirs

Regional authorities plan to build a unified digital registry of every engineered body of water after deploying an automated system that monitors flood risks in real time.

The Moscow Region has announced an initiative to create a single online registry of all artificial reservoirs. Throughout 2026, specialists from the regional government will map each pond and catalog its technical characteristics. The plan was detailed by Vitaly Mosin, the region’s minister of ecology and natural resources.

He emphasized that no Russian region yet has a comparable digital registry or digital twins of water infrastructure, even though such resources are critically important. With comprehensive data, authorities will be able to forecast emergencies and monitor the overall condition of the reservoirs.

AI Will Track Flood Risks

An automated flood-monitoring system has already been installed across the region: 166 water-level sensors are now operating in 40 municipalities. The system eliminates human error, freeing public-sector employees for higher-priority tasks.

Russian researchers are also developing services that track river behavior. Moscow State University recently introduced the first large-scale platform for monitoring riverbank conditions across Northern Eurasia, compiling extremely detailed information on 620,000 water segments.
