Nornickel Opens World's First AI-Powered Palladium Research Laboratory

Nornickel has launched a new research laboratory at the Lomonosov science and technology cluster in Moscow, where artificial intelligence plays a central role in the development of new materials. The company plans to create 100 fundamentally new substances at the facility by 2030.

The laboratory is the first dedicated research center in the world focused specifically on palladium-based technologies. AI supports the entire research cycle, from analyzing global scientific databases and generating hypotheses to proposing chemical compositions and designing laboratory experiments. "Our chief analyst receives a weekly briefing that has already been prioritized for new ideas. He can see who around the world has been experimenting with palladium and assess how those developments fit the Center's objectives," said Dmitry Izotov, director of the Center for Palladium Technologies.

Research efforts are focused on emerging sectors including alternative energy, electric transportation, and microelectronics. Among the projects already deployed are palladium-based electrodes for water purification, which are being used in the municipal water system of Rostov-on-Don. The center also collaborates with more than 25 Russian research teams.
