Russia Deploys Digital Monitoring System for Industrial Equipment

MTS Installs IoT Sensors to Detect Equipment Failures Before They Happen

Russian telecom and tech company MTS has implemented a digital monitoring system for industrial equipment used in the production of phosphorus, mineral, and chemical fertilizers. The system is built on NB-IoT (Narrowband Internet of Things) sensors that transmit data with minimal power consumption and can operate autonomously without a continuous power connection.

The sensors are installed on components such as bearing mounts in conveyor motors, where they continuously track vibration levels. If the frequency exceeds normal thresholds, the system immediately flags a potential malfunction — such as a bearing failure, loose mounting, or shaft defect. In addition to vibration, the network monitors pressure, temperature, and other key parameters, allowing maintenance teams to identify issues before accidents or breakdowns occur.

Lower Maintenance Costs, Higher Reliability

Using MTS’s NB-IoT network significantly reduces maintenance costs, simplifies sensor installation, and provides flexibility for relocating or reconfiguring equipment. The system was successfully tested at the “Phosphorit” plant and is now ready for scaling across other industrial enterprises.

By integrating IoT technology into production, Russian industry is shifting from scheduled maintenance to continuous monitoring — a transition that enhances safety, operational efficiency, and predictive maintenance across key sectors of the economy.
