Russia Is to Build an Inter-University Campus to Train Technology Leaders in Smolensk
The new center of expertise will bring together fields ranging from intelligent piloting systems to advanced approaches to agriculture.

A new innovative inter-university campus, dubbed Gagarin, is to be built in the city of Smolensk, regional governor Vasily Anokhin said. According to him, the campus will focus on four core areas: creative industries, intelligent piloting systems, high-productivity and sustainable agriculture, and translational medicine.
All four tracks rely heavily on digital technologies. Agriculture is increasingly becoming a high-tech sector, with active use of unmanned systems and artificial intelligence. Digital tools have long been used in healthcare and are now strengthening early and more accurate disease diagnosis.
Digital skills are also critical for the creative industries, while intelligent piloting systems require engineering competencies at the intersection of physics and information technology.
IT Competence Centers
As the governor of the Smolensk region emphasized, a modern university should serve not only as an educational venue but also as a center for scientific research. At the campus, students will gain hands-on research skills. Cooperation with high-tech companies is also planned to support practical training for young specialists.
The launch of inter-university campuses is emerging as a new trend in Russian education. Research organizations, IT and industrial leaders, and government institutions are pooling their efforts to cultivate the technology leaders of the future.
