Russia to Digitize Books on the Culture of Indigenous Peoples of the North
The project aims to preserve a unique cultural heritage for future generations through digital technologies.

Russia is set to digitize books documenting the culture of Indigenous small-numbered peoples of the North, Siberia, and the Far East, including the Nenets, Khanty, Selkup, Evenki, Mansi, and others. The project will be overseen by the federal Ministry of Culture and the Russian State Library of Arts.
The work is scheduled to be completed in 2026 and will be funded from the federal budget. Digital copies will be stored in the collections of the Russian State Library of Arts. Online access will allow users to explore folklore collections, traditions, distinctive forms of traditional crafts, dialects, and the fundamentals of traditional economic practices.
Preserving a Unique Heritage
Russia is also actively working to preserve national languages through modern digital services. New languages and dialects are regularly added to Yandex Translate. At the end of 2025, Mansi, Abazin, and Nogai were added. In total, the platform now supports 18 languages of Russia’s Indigenous peoples.
