Tatarstan to Add QR Codes to Every Historic Building
The digital project will let residents and tourists instantly access the history, architecture, and famous residents of each site.

The Republic of Tatarstan is launching an ambitious initiative to equip all historic buildings with QR codes that link to detailed archival records. By scanning a code, users will be able to learn when a building was constructed, who designed it, and which notable figures lived in or visited the site.
The project was announced at a meeting of the State Committee of Tatarstan for Archival Affairs, which oversees the republic’s growing efforts to digitize its cultural heritage.
Beyond Preservation
Digital tools are becoming central to Tatarstan’s archival work. More than 450,000 documents are already stored in electronic form, with over 5,000 organizations contributing important materials to a unified archival information system.
Online visitors most often explore genealogy and local history, prompting the launch of new interactive projects such as “History Map” and “Yadkar”, which aim to boost tourism and preserve the republic’s cultural legacy.
By 2027, every resident of Tatarstan will even be able to retrieve their family tree through the national e-government platform, Gosuslugi.
The initiative turns history into something tangible — or rather, scannable — bringing centuries of local heritage just a tap away.
