Russian Students Build AI System to Sort Fish by Size, Weight, and Quality

The computer vision–powered project could speed up seafood processing and reduce waste in the fishing industry.

Graduates of the Northern (Arctic) Federal University, Artem Shendrik and Arseny Repin, have developed an AI-driven fish sorting system that uses computer vision to automatically determine species, size, weight, and detect defective catches. The project, they say, can significantly improve efficiency in fish processing and help modernize Russia’s seafood industry.

“The main focus is on identifying the fish species using artificial intelligence,” said Shendrik. “By applying computer vision, we can not only cut down on manual labor but also increase the processing speed.”

Scalable and Ship-Ready

The system’s modular design allows it to be integrated into existing conveyor lines or installed aboard fishing vessels and at processing plants. By automating a traditionally labor-intensive task, it aims to streamline quality control while ensuring consistent standards.

The project has already drawn praise from Arkhangelsk Region Governor Alexander Tsybulskiy, who emphasized the importance of supporting homegrown innovation.

“This is a fully domestic system that deserves to be promoted,” he said. “It’s a practical, real-world solution developed by graduates of our own university.”

With Russia’s fishing industry seeking greater automation and sustainability, projects like this AI sorter show how young engineers are bringing digital precision to one of the country’s oldest trades.
