Russian Rescuers Successfully Test Drones in Harsh Weather Conditions

Emergency crews put quadcopters through their paces at low temperatures and during nighttime operations.

In Russia’s Mari El Republic, specialists from the Emergencies Ministry (EMERCOM) have conducted dedicated training flights of unmanned aerial vehicles in challenging weather conditions. The exercise marks another step in the digital transformation of rescue services and the adoption of advanced transport technologies.

Rescuers tested widely used DJI Phantom and Mavic 3 Pro quadcopters at low temperatures and in the dark. The main goal was to assess the drones’ reliability, including their resistance to external conditions and battery performance in freezing weather. Both preparation and flights were completed successfully.

According to the press service of EMERCOM’s regional directorate in Mari El, such trials are critical for day-to-day rescue operations. Drones have long become indispensable tools in search-and-rescue missions, reconnaissance during floods and wildfires, and inspections of damaged buildings. The tests have given specialists a clearer understanding of how the equipment performs in extreme environments.

Ready to Help in Any Climate

Each drone is equipped with a camera, a navigation module, and a control system. The aircraft can climb to altitudes of up to 500 meters, operate at distances of up to two kilometers from the operator, and fly autonomously for up to 20 minutes. These capabilities allow responders to assess situations effectively without putting human lives at risk.

The experience gained is relevant not only for Russia, but also for the global community, demonstrating how widely available technologies can enhance the effectiveness of emergency services in virtually any climate.
