Russian University Develops Algorithm to Assess Patient Test Results
The new system not only flags abnormal lab values, but also explains to surgeons why urgent intervention may be required.

At Moscow’s Sechenov University, researchers at the University Hospital Surgery Clinic No. 2 are developing a neural-network algorithm designed to detect critical changes in patients’ laboratory test results, the university’s press service said.
The project addresses the challenge of identifying clinically significant deviations in lab indicators in a timely manner. This is especially important in surgical care, where critical abnormalities require an immediate response from medical staff.
More Than an Alert, a Rationale
The algorithm does more than simply signal an abnormal result. It analyzes the patient’s medical history, trends in lab values, comorbidities, and current treatment, then produces a brief clinical explanation of why the situation is critical at that moment.
The system continues to monitor key patient indicators for a defined period and reminds physicians when a follow-up assessment is needed.
