15 Countries to Collaborate on Russia’s Unique MBIR Nuclear Reactor

Russia is creating an international consortium around its cutting-edge fast-neutron research reactor, underscoring the country’s role as a global tech leader in nuclear science.

Russia is forming an international consortium to conduct joint research at the unique MBIR nuclear reactor, highlighting its openness in high-tech collaboration. According to Rosatom, the project will involve participants from more than 15 countries, including Belarus, China, India, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and others, as well as international organizations such as the IAEA.

The multipurpose fast-neutron research reactor (MBIR), now under construction in Dimitrovgrad, is set to become one of the most advanced facilities in the world. Its launch is scheduled for 2028. What makes the project unique is that Russia is offering international partners access to cutting-edge scientific infrastructure without requiring them to bear the costs of construction or safety.

Researchers from different countries will be able to carry out experiments at MBIR to develop fourth-generation reactors, new materials, and nuclear fuel cycle technologies. This step emphasizes Russia’s role as a technological leader ready to share expertise for the global development of peaceful nuclear power and to address worldwide scientific challenges.
