A Moscow Digital Pet Adoption Service Helped Two Shelter Cats Find a Home on New Year’s Night

The city’s Mospitomets platform is turning pet adoption into a streamlined digital process—connecting people with animals from municipal shelters, even on holidays.

On New Year’s night of 2026, two cats from Moscow’s Zelenograd animal shelter—Bart and Man—were spending the holiday as they always had: warm, fed, and surrounded by other animals, but still without a family. Meanwhile, a Moscow resident decided to finally fulfill a long-held wish to adopt a pet. Browsing animal profiles on the Mospitomets service on the city portal mos.ru, she stopped at one photo. The decision was made.

On January 1, she visited the shelter. The cat she initially chose could not be adopted for medical reasons, so staff предложили выбрать другого. When she entered the room with the cats, the moment turned emotional.

“They were all looking at me. Some asked to be picked up, others clung to me. I realized I was deciding someone’s fate,” the woman, Tatiana, recalled. “I can’t take everyone home—but they all want one.”

She didn’t take everyone. But that day, Bart and Man found a family. On January 16, they left the shelter for their new home. Tatiana chose them because they were older cats—kittens usually have a better chance of being adopted. At home, Bart and Man became Boris and Manny, surrounded by care and warmth.

A Digital Path From Shelter to Home

The Mospitomets service allows Moscow residents to choose animals by age, size, color, and other parameters. Users can contact volunteers directly—who remain available even during holidays—and book a visit to meet a potential pet.

The platform currently features profiles of more than 1,200 socialized animals from 13 municipal shelters. Beyond adoption listings, the service also provides detailed guidance on helping animals adapt to a new home. All pets in the system are vaccinated, microchipped, and ready for relocation.

City officials describe Mospitomets as an example of how digital public services can improve everyday life—making emotionally significant decisions simpler, safer, and more accessible.

Earlier reports also noted that Russia is preparing a nationwide digital platform aimed at helping every stray animal find a home. The pilot version of the My Pet system is set to launch in the Tyumen region.
