AI Helps Build a Hospital of the Future in Moscow
Remote crane control and facial recognition systems have been deployed at the construction site of a new building for the Sklifosovsky Institute.
One of Russia’s most advanced medical complexes is taking shape in Moscow at Bolshaya Sukharevskaya Square: a new building for the N. V. Sklifosovsky Research Institute for Emergency Medicine. The project has become a testing ground for cutting-edge technologies, according to the Moscow city government.
Smartwatches and Face ID
The construction site combines established engineering methods with digital tools. The new center is being built using the “diaphragm wall” technique—a deep, monolithic concrete structure that protects the excavation from groundwater and collapse. Borrowed from metro construction, the method is being used for a medical facility for the first time.
At the same time, the site is equipped with digital systems. Builders use smartwatches that log the start and end of shifts, actual working hours, and downtime. The project also employs Face ID technology—a facial recognition–based access control system for the construction site. It helps track employee work hours and prevents unauthorized access.
Artificial Intelligence and Laser Scanning
In addition, a remote-control system has been installed for construction cranes. This setup eliminates the risk of crane operators falling and reduces human error to near zero. Officials expect the system to cut staff downtime by up to 40 percent and speed up construction by 10 percent.
Artificial intelligence and laser scanning are also being used to monitor the movement of materials and construction waste on site.
Earlier, it was reported that the Republic of Bashkortostan became the first region in Russia to fully implement and launch a digital construction management system. The platform covers every stage of the process—from design and construction to commissioning buildings and roads.
