Perm Polytechnic Researchers Model Hydrogen Combustion in a Gas Turbine
The findings mark an important step toward preparing power generation facilities to switch to a new type of fuel.

Researchers at Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNRPU) have successfully modeled hydrogen combustion in a gas turbine under conditions designed to closely replicate real-world operation. This marks an important step toward preparing power generation facilities to switch to a fuel that is more environmentally friendly and efficient than conventional hydrocarbons.
For the first time in Russia, researchers have obtained precise operating parameters under which hydrogen burns stably without damaging equipment. For the study, they built a 3D model of a combustion chamber that included all its components. They accounted for its design features to make the model as close as possible to an actual turbine. The model brought together all the complex processes involved: airflow, fuel-air mixing, and the formation of harmful emissions.
