The World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) has completed a pre-startup peer review at the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, which is being built by Russia’s Rosatom State Corporation. Experts assessed Unit 1’s readiness for startup and subsequent operation. The main phase of the review took two weeks.

The experts reviewed operating documentation, observed plant personnel at work, and conducted walkthroughs of production facilities. They also assessed equipment operation arrangements, personnel work systems, and the readiness of emergency systems. An earlier phase of the review focused on observing shift crews working at the unit control room on a full-scope simulator.

“Akkuyu Nuclear will serve as the plant's operating organization throughout the entire lifecycle of the Akkuyu NPP. That is why the safety, reliability, and efficiency of future operations are central to our work even at the stage of preparing Unit 1 for startup. As we implement the project, we are consistently adopting advanced international practices and approaches developed across the global nuclear industry. WANO's pre-startup peer review is an important part of this effort. It provides an independent professional assessment, allows us to exchange experience with colleagues, and helps identify areas where our operational processes can be further improved,” said Sergey Butskikh, CEO of Akkuyu Nuclear JSC.
