Cultural and Religious Sites in Russia Are Getting Smart Utility Upgrades

In a move to modernize energy use in public spaces, Russia is equipping mosques, churches, and other cultural landmarks with intelligent gas metering systems.

In the capital of Dagestan, Makhachkala, the city’s Central Mosque has been fitted with a digital gas consumption monitoring system. This is part of a regional initiative by the local gas service, which aims to equip all socially significant buildings in the city with smart metering devices. The mosque is located in the Kirovsky district, where more than 460 buildings have already adopted the new system.

Often referred to as the architectural gem of Dagestan, the Central Mosque draws both worshippers and tourists with its grand design and ornate interior. With the implementation of the smart system, artificial intelligence can now track gas usage in real time, enabling substantial energy savings.

These smart meters are being installed in religious institutions across Russia, including Orthodox churches. The rollout has been especially active in the Kirov and Belgorod regions, signaling a broader national push toward digitized energy efficiency in the utility sector.
