Dentists in Russia’s Far East Are Using AI to Help Diagnose Dental Conditions

A Russian AI system is analyzing 3D dental scans, flagging potential problems, and giving dentists a faster way to interpret complex imaging data.

Dentists in Russia’s Primorsky region have begun using artificial intelligence to assist with diagnosis. At the dental clinic of Pacific State Medical University, doctors are now working with Diagnocat, a domestic AI system that analyzes cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans, according to Argumenty i Fakty – Vladivostok.

The system processes CBCT data to create a three-dimensional model of the maxillofacial area while keeping radiation exposure for patients to a minimum. AI algorithms scan the images and assess the condition of teeth, bone tissue, maxillary sinuses, and joints. Potential issues—such as cysts, inflammation, signs of sinusitis, or changes in the temporomandibular joint—are automatically flagged.

Based on this analysis, the system generates a preliminary report for the dentist.

According to Yulia Furgal, chief physician of the dental clinic, artificial intelligence does not replace doctors but acts as a clinical tool. “The specialist receives ready-made analytics and can focus on diagnosis and treatment planning,” she said, emphasizing that the final medical decision is always made by a human doctor.

The new technology will also be used to train future dentists. Diagnocat is currently the only AI-powered dental imaging software in Russia that is officially registered as a medical device for cloud-based processing of dental scans.
