New Job Scam in Russia Exploits Online Employment Platforms – Experts Warn

Cybersecurity experts warn of a growing scam in which fake employers use job sites to lure victims into sending large sums of money.
Cybersecurity specialists in Russia have identified a new online fraud scheme that targets job seekers. According to a statement from VTB Bank, scammers pose as legitimate employers and convince potential employees to send them money under false pretenses.
The fraud begins with criminals posting attractive job listings on popular employment websites, promising high salaries. Once an applicant submits a resume, they receive an immediate job offer. Both parties sign what appears to be a legitimate employment contract. The scammer, posing as a supervisor, then begins assigning simple remote tasks to simulate real work.
Soon after, the 'employer' requests help transferring money—often framed as an urgent need to purchase medicine for a relative. The victim is told they’ll be reimbursed once the employer returns from a trip. In some cases, the scammers continue asking for additional payments or abruptly cut off communication and block the victim.
Experts urge job seekers to thoroughly vet employers before signing any contracts. A genuine employer will never ask for personal financial assistance. Red flags include any requests for money during probationary periods or onboarding.
The incident highlights the growing sophistication of cyber fraud and the need for heightened vigilance in online job searches.
