Russia Begins Building Its First Smart Suburban Community

A new housing project near Chelyabinsk will feature 121 cottages equipped with digital technologies, marking Russia’s first attempt to apply smart home systems to an entire residential community.
Construction has started on Russia’s first smart suburban complex in the Chelyabinsk region, led by developer Golos Group. The settlement, named Golos Gorozhane, will consist of 121 modern cottages unified by a consistent architectural style and shared infrastructure. The key innovation is that every house and the entire area will be equipped with smart digital technologies.
In the base package, all residents will receive smart locks and sensors for doors, windows, and appliances. Optional upgrades include smart lighting, outlets, and curtains. The system can be managed through a smart speaker or a mobile app, and it is designed to function even without an internet connection.
Intelligent technologies will extend beyond the homes themselves. The community will feature automated car access controlled by digital tags, smart parcel lockers for delivery services, and surveillance systems capable of detecting unusual behavior. Safety, respect for quiet, cleanliness, and personal boundaries are set to be core principles of the community.
The first phase of housing is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2026. The project has received federal backing, with plans for its experience to help shape new nationwide standards for smart residential construction in Russia.
