Russia Brings Mobile Internet to the Peak of Mount Oblachnaya

An innovative telecom solution has brought mobile coverage to one of the most remote and rugged peaks of the Russian Far East.

By Svetlana Bondarchuk, Sikhote-Alin National Reserve

For the first time, a Russian mobile operator has provided network coverage at the summit of Mount Oblachnaya in Primorsky Krai—one of the highest peaks in the southern Sikhote-Alin range. At an altitude of 1,854 meters (6,083 feet) above sea level, visitors can now access mobile internet speeds of up to 50 Mbps, allowing climbers to connect online right from the mountain top.

The achievement demonstrates the practical potential of deploying advanced telecom technologies in extreme environments—a step that matters not only for Russia, but also for the global effort to close the digital divide.

Since the mountain lies within the remote Zov Tigra National Park, traditional infrastructure construction was not feasible. Engineers developed an alternative technical solution that enabled network deployment without building permanent facilities. This milestone opens new possibilities for communication in protected and hard-to-reach natural areas.

With the new network in place, climbers and hikers can use navigation tools, stay in touch with their families, and share photos and videos in real time. Reliable connectivity also enhances safety during challenging ascents.

The launch of mobile coverage on Mount Oblachnaya is part of a broader strategy to extend digital infrastructure into remote regions of Russia. Similar projects have already connected other popular hiking destinations in Primorye, including Mount Pidan and Mount Falaza.

Mount Oblachnaya is the second-highest peak in Primorsky Krai. Its alpine meadows and diverse wildlife attract tens of thousands of tourists each year, especially in October and November.
