Russia Considers Watermarking AI-Generated Content
Lawmakers are pushing for digital watermarks on AI-generated media, framing the measure as modern ethics rather than censorship.

Russia may soon introduce mandatory watermarks for content created with artificial intelligence, according to Artem Sheikin, first deputy chairman of the Federation Council’s Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Building. In an interview with Parliamentary Newspaper, Sheikin said that digital watermarking and deepfake detection technologies should be widely developed and adopted.
He emphasized that labeling AI-generated material in media, social networks, and advertising should not be viewed as censorship, but as a matter of public ethics.
Sheikin also stressed the importance of public awareness campaigns to educate people about technologies that could be used against them.
