Russia Is Building 'Smart' Sports Complexes Across the Regions

Automated sports centers equipped with climate control, VR training, and digital athlete passports are redefining how Russia trains professionals and nurtures future champions.
Across Russia’s regions, new sports complexes are being built with full automation at their core. According to the outlet Bryanskaya Guberniya, each facility features a central control panel that manages everything from opening windows to fire alarms and public address systems. Independent water heating and climate control systems maintain optimal conditions year-round, regardless of weather.
What makes these complexes stand out is that all the equipment is domestically produced. A flagship 'smart' facility in Bryansk is set to open in October 2025, hosting wrestling, gymnastics, and a variety of team sports.
Russian athletes are increasingly training with advanced technologies, particularly in recovery. Researchers have designed virtual reality environments for hockey players, biathletes, and wrestlers, enabling them to regain form faster after injuries. Healthy athletes also undergo digital fitness testing inside VR arenas.
Looking ahead, Russia plans to roll out electronic passports for future Olympic champions. These digital profiles will track health data, training levels, and achievements, offering a comprehensive record of each athlete’s performance.
