Russia Strengthens Its Fight Against Wildfires with New Drones

Russia is strengthening its wildfire response with a new generation of domestically built drones, as Siberian regions begin testing advanced Geoscan UAVs equipped with thermal sensors and high‑precision monitoring tools.

New Russian Geoscan drones have begun field testing in the Republic of Buryatia to support wildfire suppression efforts. These UAVs come equipped with thermal imaging systems and specialized sensors, enabling rapid detection of fires and coordinated response even in remote and hard‑to‑reach areas.

According to experts, the new domestic platform offers key advantages over foreign counterparts, smotrim.ru reports.

“Unlike similar systems, our drone comes fully equipped with a thermal imager, which is critical for detecting concealed fire sources. It has a flight range of up to 10 kilometers and can ascend to an altitude of 4,000 meters,” explained Andrey Tokmakov, a consultant with the regional forest control department.

A More Effective Strategy for Fire Elimination

These UAVs allow rapid assessment of the wildfire situation and help determine the optimal deployment of firefighting crews and equipment. The successful use of the drones in Siberia’s harsh conditions highlights the potential of Russian technology for international application.

Plans for next year include deploying additional UAV units to the northern districts of Buryatia, which suffered some of the most severe fire damage this season. This marks the second batch of drones supplied to the region.
