Russian Messenger MAX Rolls Out Digital ID Feature
Users of Russia’s MAX messenger can now pilot a digital ID system designed to replace paper documents for everyday verification — from proving age to confirming student or family status.

The digital ID function has been launched in MAX on a trial basis. It serves as an electronic equivalent of paper documents for verifying age, student status, parenthood, and other circumstances.
Any Russian citizen over 18 with a verified profile on the government services portal Gosuslugi can create an ID. Biometric data can be added during registration or uploaded by scanning a new-format international passport. Users then confirm their identity via a selfie.
Each profile generates a dynamic QR code, refreshing every 30 seconds and accessible only on the user’s device for security. The option is already being tested in Magnit grocery stores to confirm age during purchases.
Once testing concludes, MAX users will be able to complete verification through Gosuslugi, while government agencies will receive confirmed accounts within the platform. This, developers say, gives the domestic messenger a competitive edge over foreign rivals. Other user benefits include stronger fraud protection, zero mobile data charges, built-in payment options, and medical appointment booking.
