Students from Moscow Aviation Institute and Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia are developing a wireless insulin pump that can be controlled via a mobile app. The project was announced by the press service of the Moscow Aviation Institute. Medical and scientific oversight is provided by Irina Rybkina, head of a department at the Morozov Children’s City Clinical Hospital.

According to project participant Ivan Anisimov, a student at Moscow Aviation Institute, the app analyzes glucose levels, calculates insulin doses, and helps patients continuously monitor their treatment.

“An insulin pump mimics the function of a healthy pancreas by delivering the hormone in microdoses throughout the day. This makes diabetes management more stable. Our device also reduces psychological pressure: the absence of wires and control via a familiar smartphone make it far less noticeable in everyday life,” Anisimov explained.

Deep Integration Into Russian Clinical Practice

There are no comparable devices for people with diabetes on the domestic market. Unlike foreign-made pumps, the students’ solution is designed to be deeply integrated into Russian clinical practice. Dosage recommendations will be based on protocols and standards approved within Russia’s healthcare system.

The research team is currently refining a minimum viable product and completing development of the software component required for certification. The developers plan to register the software and file patents for the industrial design, invention, and utility model in the near future. The fully finished product is expected to be ready for clinical trials within a year.
