Russian University Develops App to Help Wheelchair Users Find Adaptive Clothing

A new inclusive service makes it possible to select perfectly fitting clothes remotely—without the need for physical try-ons.

A graduate student at Omsk State Technical University has won a grant to create a digital clothing selection service for wheelchair users, the university’s press office announced. The project, led by Darya Shalmina from the Faculty of Art and Technology, is designed to make fashion more inclusive by accounting for the body’s shape in a seated position.

Measuring Comfort, Not Just Size

“The service is designed so that measurements can be taken quickly and remotely—without requiring a person to change position,” Shalmina said. “Right now, people with spinal injuries often face the biggest challenge at the fitting stage. Putting on a single garment can take from five to fifteen minutes. Our product removes the need to visit a store in person while still ensuring the clothes fit correctly.”

The development team is currently recruiting IT specialists to combine the project’s modules into a single, user-friendly interface. Within a year, they plan to launch the service with support from fashion brand FORMABLACK and a Moscow-based distributor interested in collaboration.

By merging design, technology, and accessibility, the project highlights how digital innovation can make fashion more inclusive—giving people with disabilities more freedom to choose clothing that fits their bodies and their lives.
