Russia’s Smart Lighting System Now Monitors 110,000 Streetlights Near Moscow

A digital monitoring platform is reshaping public infrastructure in the Moscow region — slashing emergency response times and controlling thousands of lighting and power units.

The Moscow region has successfully deployed a large-scale smart lighting and grid monitoring system. According to regional officials, over 110,000 streetlights, 2,500 distribution cabinets, and 3,000 kilometers of power lines are currently under digital supervision. The data was shared with CNews by the Ministry of Public Administration, IT, and Communications of the Moscow Region.

Since 2024, this system has been augmented by an Automated Outdoor Lighting Control System (ASUNO), which enables remote adjustment of light intensity, optimizes energy use, and allows real-time detection of grid failures.

Together, the platforms provide 24/7 monitoring of the entire infrastructure. All sensor data feeds into a centralized control center for immediate analysis.

A standout feature of the system is its automated response to citizen complaints. When issues are reported, the system instantly assigns them to the relevant utility providers and triggers updates via a chatbot. As a result, response times have improved by 35% compared to previous systems.

Local authorities plan to scale up the platform further, expanding the number of monitored assets and integrating new tools to enhance service quality.
