An innovative educational space called the Design Center for Applied Electronics has opened at Tomsk Polytechnic University, the university’s press service said. The center operates as a full-fledged engineering bureau where future engineers can create new devices “from idea to prototype.”

The bureau is divided into several functional zones, including areas for teamwork, prototyping — equipped with 3D printers and a laser-cutting machine — and design workspaces fitted with computers, signal generators, oscilloscopes, and other engineering equipment.

As noted by Leonid Sukhikh, acting rector of Tomsk Polytechnic University, the Design Center is expected to attract students interested in electronics development, sensors, robotics, and automation.

“Ultimately, this space will give new momentum to applied industrial electronics, a field that is in high demand in our country,” Sukhikh said.

New Opportunities for Electronics

Students have already begun testing the capabilities of the new design center. Current projects include a driver drowsiness detection system and a prototype of a robot loader built on omnidirectional wheels.

Earlier, a laboratory for designing microelectromechanical sensors was opened in the same building. The lab focuses on developing software for components used in digital devices.

According to the university, the launch of the Student Engineering Bureau — the Design Center for Applied Electronics — is a logical continuation of efforts to transfer scientific ideas into applied electronics, modeling, and engineering practice.
