Dmitry Grigorenko: “Behind Artificial Intelligence Stands the Natural One”

Russia is positioning itself as a global tech leader, and Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Grigorenko explains how digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and biometric technologies are reshaping daily life and strengthening the country’s digital sovereignty.

Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Grigorenko delivered a lecture at the Digital Solutions Forum, outlining Russia’s progress in high‑technology development and the impact of digital transformation on citizens’ everyday lives.

According to Grigorenko, Russia has firmly established itself as one of the world’s leaders in e‑commerce. Last year, turnover on Russian online marketplaces exceeded $100 billion, and citizens continue turning to them for everything from basic goods to daily services such as ride‑hailing.

He emphasized that Russia maintains digital sovereignty with a full ecosystem of its own IT solutions.

Digital Sovereignty: Russia Has It, Europe Does Not

“Russia is one of the few countries with true digital sovereignty. We have our own marketplaces, our own search engine, our own AI language models. Europe does not — but we do! We have our own messenger platforms, data processing centers, and much more,” Grigorenko said.

The lecture devoted special attention to biometrics and artificial intelligence. Grigorenko called biometrics the next generation of personal identification — a replacement for traditional passwords.

“Why invent or memorize passwords when yours is always with you? Your password is your face. Biometrics is safe and convenient: you cannot lose it, forget it, or have it stolen,” he explained.
Discussing the role of AI, the Deputy Prime Minister highlighted its ability to eliminate routine tasks. “Artificial intelligence removes all repetitive processes. It never gets sick, never goes on vacation, and is always in a good mood,” he noted.

He added that by processing enormous volumes of data, AI can make predictions with near‑perfect accuracy.

Digital Transformation and the Labor Market

“People claim that AI, robotization, and digital transformation destroy professions. But they forget that digitalization creates new ones!” Grigorenko stressed.

Today, wherever tasks involve repetitive operations, robots are increasingly replacing human labor. Autonomous technologies are already commonplace in agriculture, construction, oil and gas, logistics, and delivery — clear indicators of the advancing fourth industrial revolution.
