Russia Implements Advanced Water Monitoring at Akkuyu Nuclear Plant

The joint Russian-Turkish project uses real-time sensors to protect the Mediterranean ecosystem.
Russia is advancing construction of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast. Operated by Rosatom’s subsidiary Akkuyu Nuclear JSC facility will include four high-capacity power units. This collaboration stems from bilateral agreements between the Russian and Turkish governments.
The plant is now integrating advanced Russian IT solutions with an automated water discharge monitoring system among them. This system remotely tracks the speed and purity of water flows and ensures environmental standards are met before discharge into the sea.
According to Akkuyu Nuclear CEO Sergey Butskikh, this will be Turkey’s first nuclear power plant built to the highest international standards. Monitoring will extend beyond marine discharge to include air, soil, flora, and fauna—reflecting the project's sustainability-driven approach.
The system will operate throughout the entire life cycle of the plant and maintain constant environmental oversight.
