Russian Engineers Develop Antenna for Extreme Environments

The new Wi-Fi antenna from Perm Polytechnic University can maintain stable connections where traditional communication systems fail — from Arctic construction sites to remote mining regions.

Scientists at Perm National Research Polytechnic University have developed a unique antenna for specialized equipment designed to operate where cellular networks are unreliable or nonexistent. The innovation will be used in hard-to-reach regions of Russia, including the Far North. The device can function under extreme temperatures, maintaining a stable signal even across long distances.

The new Wi-Fi antenna aims to solve the problem of poor connectivity in remote industrial zones such as mining, construction, and logging sites. It enables continuous data transmission from dump trucks, excavators, and loaders to mobile data collectors, helping reduce downtime and optimize logistics.

The antenna’s main advantages are high efficiency and low cost. Its data transfer rate reaches 1.56 Mbps—2.5 times faster than standard counterparts. The device consists of a copper trace arranged in a zigzag pattern on a printed circuit board, eliminating the need for additional components and significantly reducing production costs compared to other high-power antennas.
