Yandex Tests “Alice AI” as an Interactive Learning Assistant

New mode turns answers into guided problem-solving for students

Yandex has begun testing a new interaction mode for its AI assistant, Alice AI, shifting from simple answers to guided dialogue. Instead of providing a ready-made solution, the system walks users through a problem step by step. For example, when a student inputs a math problem, the assistant offers a sequence of hints rather than the final answer.

During the interaction, Alice asks leading questions and helps the user understand the underlying logic of the solution.

Test Mode

To activate the feature, users can tap “Try learning mode.” This opens a chat where the AI breaks down tasks step by step. It also suggests similar examples to reinforce understanding and check whether the material has been absorbed.

The interface includes a handwriting input field and a built-in calculator, making it easier to work with formulas and calculations that are more convenient to write manually.

Coming to Chat

The feature is currently available to a limited group of users. Yandex says it will later be integrated directly into the main Alice chat and run on the company’s updated language model.

Developers are focusing on interactivity. The goal is not just to explain answers but to engage users in the learning process, much like a teacher in a classroom.

Feedback and Adoption

“We see AI as a tutor that can be useful for both students and parents. At the same time, it is important to understand that artificial intelligence cannot replace teachers. It is most effective for explaining tasks, practicing skills, and preparing for exams,” said Darya Kozlova, director of education at Yandex.

Interest in such tools is already growing. According to a survey of 149 instructors from 16 universities, two-thirds are already using AI in their work, most often for images, tests, and presentations.

The education market is gradually evolving. Digital assistants are increasingly taking on the explanation of basic topics, allowing teachers to focus on more complex tasks and direct interaction with students.
