Kaspersky’s AI Detects Half a Million Cyberthreats Daily as Deepfakes Surge

AI is becoming a front-line defense against digital threats in Russia, where experts warn that deepfakes now represent the top cybersecurity risk.

Artificial intelligence and machine learning systems are helping a Russian cybersecurity company detect roughly 500,000 digital threats every day. The announcement was made by Mikhail Gerber, head of consumer business at Kaspersky Lab, during the 2025 St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

Gerber emphasized that cybercriminals are constantly evolving, and the biggest gap in current defense systems is the lack of automated tools to identify deepfakes in real time. These hyper-realistic videos and voice forgeries are becoming a major vulnerability in the digital environment.

Another Russian expert recently reported a spike in deepfake activity, particularly targeting regional government officials. In the first quarter of 2025 alone, 61 unique deepfakes and 2,300 replicas were identified—accounting for 67% of all such incidents reported in 2024 and 2.6 times more than in 2023.

A separate specialist called for immediate investment in facial and voice recognition technologies, predicting that AI advancements will soon eliminate language barriers—creating new opportunities for cybercriminals. As fraud techniques grow more sophisticated, experts stress the need for faster innovation and stronger defenses across both public and private sectors.
