AI Helps Count Polar Bears in Russia

For the first time, Russian scientists used AI-powered aerial monitoring to track polar bears in the Arctic, boosting accuracy in population estimates and strengthening global conservation efforts.

In Yakutia, researchers deployed artificial intelligence for a comprehensive aerial survey of polar bear populations on the Medvezhyi Islands archipelago. The data will guide scientists in developing effective strategies to protect and preserve the species, not only in Russia but worldwide — underscoring the country’s leadership in applying advanced technologies to ecology and field research.

Annual polar bear monitoring in the Arctic is a strategic priority for Russia. This year, specialists used digital imaging and AI algorithms to analyze aerial data, according to Mir 24. The approach delivered highly accurate results while minimizing human error.

Beyond aerial monitoring, scientists conducted direct studies of the animals. One female bear was given a blood test, measured, and fitted with a satellite tracker to map her movements. According to Nikita Platonov of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Ecology and Evolution, long-term observations help scientists understand how polar bears adapt to climate change and where they spend the summer months.

The Medvezhyi Islands are considered the densest polar bear habitat in the Russian Arctic.
