Russia Unveils First 3D-Printed Bus Stop

At an international expo in Moscow, Russian engineers showcased the country’s first 3D-printed bus stop—a concrete structure designed and built in Tomsk as a glimpse into the future of urban infrastructure.

Russia’s first 3D-printed public transport stop was presented at the international ParkSeason Expo. The innovative project was developed by the Tomsk city administration in collaboration with Tomsk State University of Architecture and Building (TGASU).

Tomsk Mayor Dmitry Makhinya personally unveiled the project during a workshop on municipal practices. All load-bearing elements of the structure are printed from concrete in the university’s lab, then transported and assembled on site. “This is the technology of the future, born right here in Tomsk thanks to the partnership between the university, innovative businesses, and the city,” Makhinya said.

The 3.6-by-10.8-meter pavilion will include 14 waiting seats, planters, and information stands. The student team behind the design aimed to create an aesthetically pleasing and functional structure that demonstrates the potential of additive manufacturing.

Public transportation is one of the most promising sectors for advanced technologies in Russia. In the Moscow region, for instance, artificial intelligence is already used to monitor cleanliness at bus stops. Cameras from the 'Safe Region' system detect litter or overflowing trash bins in real time and alert local maintenance crews to clean up.
